Family History
Charles Edward (Ed) Travis came west with his father, Charles Jones Travis and mother,
Emma "Emily" Tolson ("Little Grandma") and family from Kentucky, with
brief and disappointing stays through Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa. In the Spring of
1885 they ventured to Chase County in western Nebraska where they homesteaded. Ed got a
teaching certificate and began teaching school. He met and married one of his students,
Mary Eunice Speer. They lived in a sod house ("soddy") had a farm, raised
horses, mules, cows, chickens and children.
